Seeing yourself in a new light: How aesthetic images can boost your self-esteem

There’s one moment I look forward to at every shoot. It usually comes after about twenty minutes. I turn the camera round, show the first picture on the screen – and there’s a brief silence.

Then, almost without fail, the same sentence comes up: ‘Is that really me?’

Yes. That’s you. And that’s exactly what this article is about.

Our own gaze is often the harshest

Most women’s main experience of their bodies comes from the bathroom mirror. In the morning, in the cold light, in a hurry, casting a critical eye over precisely those parts we don’t like. Added to this are mobile phone photos taken from unflattering angles, snapshots where we happen to be squinting, and an endless stream of perfectly staged images on social media.

No wonder the image we have of ourselves is often harsher than what others see. We compare ourselves to ideals that don’t actually exist – and in doing so, we overlook what really makes us who we are.

What makes an aesthetic image different

A good portrait is not a snapshot. It is created with time, with soft light, with calm, and with a gaze that does not judge but seeks: the line of your shoulder, the way you laugh when you momentarily forget the camera is there. For that moment when you’re completely at one with yourself.

Pictures like these don’t show you ‘enhanced’. They show you as you are. With lighting that flatters rather than exposes. With poses that suit your body rather than forcing it into a certain shape. And with editing that removes yesterday’s blemishes, but not you yourself.

Many women tell me afterwards that, when looking at their photos, they thought something kind about themselves for the first time in a long while. Not because they suddenly look different – but because they finally see themselves the way the people who love them do.

It’s not about perfection

I want to be honest: a photo shoot is no substitute for therapy and won’t resolve deep-seated self-doubt in one go. That would be a false promise.

But it can be a start. A small, very tangible sign that the critical voice in your head isn’t telling the whole truth. And sometimes that’s exactly what it takes to start treating yourself a little more kindly.

After all, a boudoir photoshoot is an experience in itself, not just the end result:

  • You take some time just for yourself. No appointments, no to-do list, no one you have to look after.
  • You’re quite brave. And you realise that being brave feels good – often better than you’d expect.
  • It’s up to you. What you wear, what you reveal, where your boundaries lie. Many women carry this sense of self-determination with them into their everyday lives.
  • You’ll be treated as you deserve. With respect, patience and genuine appreciation.

"But I’m not photogenic at all …"

I hear this phrase in almost every pre-shoot chat. And I understand it perfectly. But being ‘photogenic’ isn’t something you either have or don’t have. It’s a question of lighting, confidence and guidance – and that’s my job, not yours.

You don’t need any experience in front of the camera. You don’t need to have a certain figure, be a certain age or have a special occasion. I’ll show you every pose, tell you where to put your hands, and give you all the time you need. Most women are surprisingly relaxed after the first few minutes – and after an hour, they don’t want to stop at all.

That way, the feeling remains even when the camera is off

The best thing about your photos is that they last. Here are a few ideas on how to hold on to this new perspective on yourself:

  1. Choose a favourite picture for yourself. Not for Instagram, not for anyone else. For yourself. As a wallpaper on your mobile, printed out and kept in your wardrobe, or in an album that belongs only to you.
  2. Take a look at it when that critical voice starts to get loud. Not to compare yourself to others, but as a reminder: that’s me too.
  3. Write down how you felt during the shoot. A few sentences will do. Later on, they’re often just as valuable as the photos themselves.
  4. Treat yourself to a photo album. Holding pictures in your hands and leafing through them at your leisure is a completely different experience to swiping through a folder on your mobile.

Your photos remain yours

Precisely because these photos are so personal, they belong entirely to you. You’ll be able to view them in a private, password-protected gallery. I won’t publish a single photo without your express, written consent. And if you’d like, my wife will be present throughout the entire shoot – so that you feel safe from the very first moment.

Ready to see yourself in a new light?

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about it for a long time. Perhaps it’s a birthday, a new beginning, or a year that’s taken a lot out of you. Or maybe you simply want to treat yourself – for no particular reason.

Then let’s have a chat. No strings attached – over the phone or over a coffee at the studio. You tell me what you’re hoping for and what’s worrying you – and then you can take your time to decide whether you’re ready to give it a go.

I’m looking forward to showing you what I see.

Real. Sensual. Unapologetically You.
